Before your first rep

  • Bar rests on the front of your shoulders, not in your hands. Your fingers only steady it.
  • Elbows point forward and stay high throughout, upper arms roughly parallel to the floor.
  • Set the rack safeties before you unrack.

The movement

  1. 1Rest the bar across the front of your shoulders with your elbows pointed forward and high.
  2. 2Squat straight down, keeping your chest and elbows up throughout.
  3. 3Drive back up without letting the elbows drop.

Watch out for

If the bar starts sliding down your shoulders, rack it. Do not try to save the rep.

No history for this one yet. Start lighter than you think you need — you should finish every set feeling like you had four or five more reps in you. You can always add weight next session; a strain costs you weeks.

Set the pin low for your first set and add from there. Nothing is lost by starting too light on day one.
