Before your first rep

  • Feet hip-width, grip just outside your legs.
  • Hinge until your torso is around 45 degrees, back flat and locked there.
  • Let the bar hang at arms length before the first pull.

The movement

  1. 1Hinge forward until your torso is around 45 degrees, back flat, bar hanging at arms length.
  2. 2Pull the bar to your lower ribs, elbows close to your body.
  3. 3Lower under control without letting your back round.

Watch out for

Holding a hinged position under load is demanding. If your back rounds at any point, stop the set.

No history for this one yet. Start lighter than you think you need — you should finish every set feeling like you had four or five more reps in you. You can always add weight next session; a strain costs you weeks.

Set the pin low for your first set and add from there. Nothing is lost by starting too light on day one.
