Before your first rep

  • Set the thigh pad snug enough that you can't lift off the seat when the weight gets heavy.
  • Grip slightly wider than shoulder-width. Wider is not better and often just irritates the shoulder.
  • Sit with a slight backward lean, chest lifted, and hold that angle for the whole set.

The movement

  1. 1Set the thigh pad snug and grip the bar a little wider than your shoulders.
  2. 2Pull the bar down to your collarbone, driving your elbows down and back.
  3. 3Let it rise under control until your arms are straight.

Watch out for

Pulling behind the neck strains the shoulder for no extra benefit. Always pull to the front.

No history for this one yet. Start lighter than you think you need — you should finish every set feeling like you had four or five more reps in you. You can always add weight next session; a strain costs you weeks.

Set the pin low for your first set and add from there. Nothing is lost by starting too light on day one.
